Photographer’s applications can help with organizing your digital images. Image editing is the post processing, getting the image to pop and blow the viewers mind away with the beautifully captured digital image. Photoshop will not help you get organized or find anything.
Browsers – Bridge which is a component of Photoshop that is used separately, help you organize and locate images. It can download photos from a memory card, display thumbnails of an entire folder of images, apply metadata, keywords, and ratings to all or a selected group of images, and search your hard drive for a file or a set of files.
Workflow Applications – Photoshop Lightroom and Aperture may do everything you need to post processing your digital images. Like Bridge, they will download raw files from a memory card into a location you specify, rename and tag the images with keywords, and help you find specific files. Additionally, you can make image adjustments, resize, and print the images and they can help you find specific files in your storage folders.
Catalog Applications – designed to help you find and track hundreds of images. These are called image database or digital asset management programs. The work like a browser or work-flow application, it can embed a selected group of images with keywords and metadata. It can search for and display images based on criteria. It can assemble groups of selected pictures to present to a client on screen, to print, or post on a Website. A cataloging application saves information about a file and its location in its own separate database file. You can use it to find files that have been stored offline, which means that the storage medium or volume is not connected to the computer. It helps you find backup copies saved on, your CD and DVD disks. The database is separate you add metadata to an entry that is not embedded in the file; if you distribute the file, some keywords can remain private.
Applications let you display your work as a “slide show” – You can select a group of images to be seen on the monitor at one time, filling the screen. You can automate a presentation and choose the timing and the transition between images. With Photoshop Lightroom and Aperture, you can superimpose selected text and play your choice of music with your slideshow.
Extensis Portfolio is a cataloging application and Adobe Bridge is a browser. Each application organize you picture collection. Porfolio stores a thumbnail, metadata, and location for each image you add to its database. You can search for and find files even if they have been stored on the backup DVD’s you keep at a friend’s house. Bridge let you apply a one through five star system to rate your images and can filter a search so you only see the images that have earned ratings.
