dangerous Life Always Organization Exploit and Humiliate Black Women

An abortion billboard ad campaign is circulating the internet “the most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb”. The disturbing ad was placed smack dab in the middle of SOHO by Life Always™. As a part of a new national campaign to expose the truth about how Planned Parenthood targets minority neighborhoods as they perform over 300,000 abortions a year. This particular billboard is about half a mile from a Planned Parenthood abortion facility. Life Always board member Stephen Broden said that Planned Parenthood has had a devastating effect on the sustainability of the African American population. What an extremely foul way to exploit and humiliate black and non black women by placing this huge ad of an innocent child with an disturbing message. Pastor Stephen Broden should focus his energy and resources to teach and educate to prevent the spread of HIV in the black community.

“The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb,” reads the inflammatory ad sponsored by the Dallas-based pro-life group “Life Always.”

The three-story billboard at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Watts Street features an elementary-school aged African-American girl looking out at viewers with a plaintive expression, wearing a bow in her hair and a sleeveless pink jumper dress. The ad directs passersby to the group’s website, thatsabortion.com.

Life Always leader, Pastor Stephen Broden, who is African-American, said that his group intentionally released a billboard that would elicit a reaction.

“The black community is oblivious to what is going on with this practice,” Broden, 58, said about abortion rates in the African-American community.

“This is far from hyperbole, these are facts and statistically back up that abortion is having an impact on the demography of African-Americans,” he said.

According to New York City’s latest Vital Statistics report with data from 2009, two out of five pregnancies in New York City end in an abortion, giving the city an overall abortion rate of 41 percent.

Among black women in New York City, the abortion rate is reportedly 59.8 percent, while the abortion rate for Hispanic women is 41.3 percent and the rate for white women is 20.4 percent. The rate for abortions among Asian women in New York is 22.7 percent.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn both criticized the ad, with de Blasio calling for it to come down.

“To refer to a woman’s legal right to an abortion as a ‘genocidal plot’ is not only absurd, but it is offensive to women and to communities of color,” Quinn wrote in a statement of Broden’s claim that the high abortion rates among minority women amounted to genocide.

Mae Collazo, 38, who works across the street from the billboard, said she found the billboard incredibly offensive.

“I don’t like it all, what is that supposed to mean?” said Collazo, who is African American, “It makes it sound like all we do is abort our children.”

Collazo added that she didn’t think the higher percentage of abortions registered for African American women in New York necessarily reflect what is actually going on in the community, and questioned the source of the statistics and whether abortions conducted at private clinics are included in the statistics.

But some passersby agreed with the ad.

Patti D’Agostini, 48, who works at the Door Youth Center on Broome Street, said she works with many teen mothers.

“I don’t believe in abortion,” D’Agostini said. “Kids shouldn’t be having sex until they’re 18 anyways.”

Broden said his organization will remain in the city for another three weeks before kicking off similar ad campaigns in six other cities around the country.

I do love my kids and would never hurt them, i don’t even trust people to watch my kids until they are talking which means i can’t go out and have a life. And despite what my kids father believs i am still very young and i need intamacy or i will be walking into walls and yelling at everthing that moves . So you see i could be scaring my children without knowing it because of the emptiness i feel in me yelling all the time so THANKS ALOT DAD. So you keep on moving sisters i understand god bless my children for all the drama they have to see now that dad said handle it.

In “Anti- Abortion Billboard in Soho is Removed”, Cindy Rodriguez, talks about Planned Parenthood dominance in the black community has resulted in high rates of abortions among black women (2011).I feel that abortion is wrong. The article is very persuasive to me because it states a lot of facts and gives peoples opinion about the billboard. It is not fair to the unborn child’s life to be cut short. In the article the author tells how Lamar Advertising decided to take down the billboard for the sake of the “public safety” which I disagree because it is wrong and a disgrace for people to abort children.
I do believe that the ad is very convincing, but others might think otherwise. The black community has a high rate of aborting babies. The saying on the billboard states it all; “The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb.” I agree one- hundred percent because I am an African American that is also pregnant. “In the United States, the abortion rate for black women is five times that for white women.”(Chohen, 2008). Black women are not alone in having disproportionately high unintended pregnancy and abortion rates. The abortion rate among Hispanic women, for example, although not as high as the rate among black women, is double the rate among whites. (Chohen, 2008). Pastor Stephen Broden who is black and is leader of Life Always says, “Young black women should learn more about adoption and other ways that they can carry their pregnancy term” (Rodriguez, 2011). This is really good that he said this because there are other options than getting an abortion. We African American women do need to be educated on the right and wrongs of abortion. Suman Raghunathan, 34, said, “I’ve actually wanted to help organize a whole bunch of my friends to take that sign down, because it is incredibly offensive and it’s a crazy confluence of racism and classism” (Rodriguez, 2011). I do not think that is racist because it is not like that they are saying African Americans are the only one getting abortions, it is just stating that is a high percentage of black women getting more abortions than any other race. But some people agree with this billboard and some do not agree. I personally do not have a problem with what this billboard is trying to get across.
Some black women have abortions because they don’t want kids or just because.  But they do not consider what they just have do not or blankly just don’t care. I just feel like no women should even think or walk into the doctor’s office asking for an abortion. The “Life Always Organization Exploit and Humiliate Black Women” article are exposing the truth about how Planned Parenthood target minority neighborhoods as they perform over 300,000 abortions a year (2011). The billboard is about half a mile from a Planned Parenthood abortion facility. The billboard is influencing black women in our society and how wrong it is to do what they are doing. Life Always member Stephen Broden said that Planned Parenthood has had a devastating effect on the sustainability of the African American population (“Life Always”, 2011).
I think abortion is something people should never consider. They should know the consequences of having unprotected sex. People do not know or consider other consequences after getting an abortion. When you have an abortion you are killing a human being. I believe it is not fair to the fetus because he or she did nothing wrong. It is not their fault that they were conceived. I think parents who decide to abort their babies should be penalized. They should make abortions illegal; because there are always other options to consider like adoption. In the article it states how the high rates of the abortion lay within the black women. By me being a black women and pregnant I never even considered abortion as one of my choices. I am to keep my child because I think everyone deserves a life and the right to live.
