It is not often that you will see a First Lady on her knees and digging down to earth with a bunch of kids. Just in time for Earth Day on April 22nd, 2009; First Lady Michelle planted seeds with a group of school aged children in the 1,100 square-foot kitchen garden on the south grounds of the White House. Based on the digital photos of the First Lady, she does not mind getting her hands dirty, tying up her hair and wear street clothes to dig down into the earth. In a recent interview with Oprah, First Lady Michelle Obama described her goals for the garden: “We want to use it as a point of education, to talk about health, and how delicious it is to eat fresh food, and how you can take that food and make it part of a healthy diet… And hopefully kids will be interested because there are kids living here.” She planted tons of greens and vegetables that will feed the entire White House staff, her family and visiting dignitaries for White House dinners. Now of course there is someone there to do the planting but the First Lady obviously love to garden. This is a great positive green activity for the children to cherish the memory of their gardening experience with the First Lady. They will remember this positive experience for the rest of their lives. Go Green!
