WASTE LAND, the excellent documentary by Lucy Walker about Vik Muniz, a brazillian artist, who traveled to Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest dump, to create portraits depicting the men and women who salvage recyclables for a living. The portraits would be entirely made of discarded materials gathered and arranged by the pickers themselves, with the hope that art could change their lives. Muniz managed to raise $300,000, all of which was given to the Association of Collectors of the Metropolitan Landfill of Jardim Gramacho (ACAMJG), an organization led by Tiao Santos that organizes and protects the collectors. See this page for release dates near you. Muniz discuss his inspiration: watch this TED talk. It’s pretty amazing what he can do with thread, sugar, and chocolate. Source
