I decided that I would write a blog post weekly of Craigslist advertisements that solicited the local creative community to rob them of their services for mere pennies or no pay. It is an insult to expect anyone to work for free, promise exposure to use talent for photography services for a one time event or to build a model portfolio without paying the creative providers. Enough already…. models, photographers, MUA, videographers, graphic designers and set designers take a stand, folks will continue to bombard the Craigslist creative listings with bullshit request. I have notice a shift in the type of ads listed this week. Some of the creative listings are offering pay and some are very vague about their intent.
The gorgeous model in the picture is a young lady taken at a meet and greet in the Frederick, Maryland area…I absolutely love her pink hair and eyes. The interesting part about the digital image is I never saw the model again.
This is a story about a scenerio that could happen to you that was posted on facebook from one of my facebook photographers in the metro Washington, D.C. area by the name of Voxefx Photography: A Photo Editor – The Strange Case Of The Modeling Polaroid
MUA’s, Photographer and Stylists for Fashion Show – (Alexandria, Va) Exposure?
Fashion Photography – (Alexandria) This ad would have been great if they are offering the student college credit.
Models Needed! – (Tysons Corner) Pictures are great but no pay?
seeking Event Photo Assistant – (MD-DC-VA) I have seen this ad to many times to remember. What about paying the person an hourly wage? To expect an individual to work on a contingency basis could ultimately be a waste of time.
i need a dj – (vienna) nothing like a drunk dj to forget that they are not being compensated for their services…and perhaps a DUI while driving home. Oh really!
I need a nice babysitter!! – (Lorton) Confused about how this fits into the event section?
OPEN MODEL CALL! – (Greenbelt, MD) A TFCD arrangement, free photographer or free head of hair?
MODELS WANTED – (Greenbelt, MD) Free hairstyle for models…I guess?
PAPARAZZI FASHION SHOW MODEL SEARCH FOR MALE AND FEMALE MODELS – (NATIONS CAPITOL) uh huh! Ads like these prop up in most areas promising models an opportunity that never come…read the fine print.
Photographer Needed – (Arlington, VA) no pay?
Photographer Needed For Advertisement. – (MD/V.A/D.C) looking for models to sell advertisement.
Photographer wanted – build up your portfolio! – (All over DMV) Sounds like she need a professional photographer to take her pictures.
I notice a few internship positions popping up in the Art department on Craigslist. Most of the interns request are not clear about their intent. The listings sound more like companies looking for free labor. Being a mother who is concern about the opportunities that my children are connected with concerns me that folks in cyberspace think they can post information without being called on it. Teenagers graduating today need to be concern about the opportunities they endorse and become a part of. Based on my own experience with internships through a college program. I was paid a stipend, received college credit, and the work involved was minimal, listed with the college internship department, part of my financial aid package and I could use it as a reference on my resume.:
An intern is someone who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment (SIH-199), making it similar to an apprenticeship. Interns are usually college or university students, but they can also be high school students or post graduate adults seeking skills for a new career. Student internships provide opportunities for students to gain experience in their field, determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts, or gain school credit. Internships provide employers with cheap or free labor for (typically) low-level tasks, and also the prospect of interns returning to the company after completing their education and requiring little or no training.
Internship Opportunity – sound more like a part-time gig but then that could just the way I am reading the post. Responsibilities assisting with weekly email blasts, website updates, podcasts and Facebook and Twitter updates. No mention of college credit nor a stipend?
Agent Intern – (Georgetown) I get the part about working with talented artist but what is the real deal? No mention of college credit for the student nor a stipend?
2 Film Interns Needed for Local Independent Documentary – (NW DC/Columbia Heights-Mt Pleasant) This ad does mention college credit being grant contingent upon the college requirement.
Art Program and Research Intern – (Washington, DC) College credit mentioned but sounds more like a job.
Internships for Video Production & Graphic Design – (Sterling, Virginia) According to the ad this is part-time and a job.
