BET Awards 2011 Hit and Misses From On the Couch

The BET 2011 award show from the Shrine Auditorium in LA on June 26 was an hit and miss for me. I sat on my couch watching and forced myself to stay awake during the show…..where do I begin? The award show was predicable and that is an understatement. When the Smith’s children won the child star award my first thought was “if you give one child a lollipop, you must give them all one. Hmmmm! The audio was a hit and miss during the entire show….Patti Labelle was fabulous as always-loved her dress. Meagan Good looked absolutely gorgeous…she dresses up quite well. Steve Harvey is growing into his own and the recognition from the community was a nice touch. Alicia Keyes is absolutely talented….I was feeling the classical vibe to her set. Glady’s Knight was genuine and telling the truth…Patti Labelle can sing and should be recognized for her decade contributions to the music industry. Some of the folks are hoping they can last 50 years in a industry that has major flaws. I loved BET Chairman and Chief Executive Debra dress….it flowed with her as she walked across the stage….I missed Kelly Rowland Motivation performance, I was reheating a Supreme Burrito from Taco Bell and when I returned to the room the set was over. The young lady speech at the end of the show was #dead on arrival.

Tiffany Green, came out on stage to announce the winner of the BET’s Viewer’s Choice Awards with Terrance and Rocsi. She first announced that the winner was “Chris Brown, Look At Me Now” and then flipped the script and said, “I”m sorry, It’s Rihanna – What’s My Name.” Drake, of course, being featured on the song, came up to accept the award, beginning his speech with, “Well, this is awkward…” huh! You got that right…AWKWARD and embarrassing…that is putting it kindly. If this was suppose to be a joke or a subliminal stab….it clearly did not work and quite frankly…UNPROFESSIONAL!

The house was packed with black Hollywood, in attendance was Puff/P.Diddy aka Swag, Anita Baker, Nick Cannon, Miguel, Swizz Beatz & Eve, Lloyd, Lil Twist, Diggy Simmons, YC, Mindless Behavior with Tyga, and Internet sensation Karmin, Megan Ford, Queen Latifah, Bruno Mars, Ledisi, Justin Bieber, Gladys Knight, Nicki Minaj, Taraji P. Henson, Big Sean, Ne-Yo, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Patti Labelle, Steve Harvey, Kelly Rowland, Trey Songz, Lil Wayne, Drake, Chris Brown, Alicia Keys, Cee Lo Green, Jill Scott, Rick Ross, Ace Hood, DJ Khaled, La La Anthony, Shirley Caesar, Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary, Deitrick Haddon, Faithful Central Choir, Music Matters artists Mali Music and Kimberly Nichole, and host Kevin Hart at this year’s BET Awards 2011 and many other performers and presenters.

  • Steve Harvey celebrated for his humanitarian efforts
  • Mary J. Blige still got it…..
  • Patti Labelle being recognized for being a singer and a “DIVA.”
  • Chris Brown finally  being allowed to be an entertainer despite his shortcoming….hopefully he is growing up.
  • Lil Wayne award seem like a setup and not sure what that was about? Making amends for his shortcoming is not the business.
  • The Star kid award threw me off….I thought BET was an adult production? There were no other kids in attendance? Scratching head…
  • Nikki Minaj with her speech threw me for a loop..huh? Seriously!
  • That skit with Justin Beiber and Minaj should have been scrape…corny and not sure about the punchline.
  • Kelly Rowland performing motivation with a group of men. Give that young lady a skin endorsement…naturally gorgeous.
  • Alicia Keyes is truly a talented musician and performer.
  • Jill Scott look fabulous and woman has real talented that goes unnoticed.
  • Nick Cannon look suave in his Sear’s white attire.
  • Queen Latifah Revolution….loved her straight hair and girl skin is on point.
  • Why didn’t B.o.B. win an award? Hmmmm….
  • Kanye West win was a surprise. I liked Lil Wayne until he opened his mouth and put down dark skin women…oh really!
  • Love the The Real Husband skit was refreshing….funny!
  • Nia Long makes me want to get pregnant…she is a gorgeous woman. Pregnancy looks great on her….YUP!
  • The look on Rev. Al Sharpton face is priceless….can we say side-eye with a capital “S!”
  • The pic of the Smith’s…why this pic? Someone trying to make my girl look bad…NOT! Of course she is the queen of her castle and Will is comfortable being in his zone.
  • Adorable Smith kids but perhaps another venue will be more receptive to their abilities and talent or is there any out there for kids in their age group? #justsaying everyone in our community will not feel the fashion forward or progressive lifestyle of these the Smith kids….
  • Who was the photographer hired for the event? All of the pictures taken were clear but the green carpet was tacky and there was no synergy with the fashion choices, to each is own was the theme for the night….hmmmm!
  • Whoever was the sound guy need additional sound and video training or #fired….during the @BET AWARD SHOW 2011 entire show; the audio was in and out during the broadcast. I heard cuss words that were suppose to be filtered out during the when entire show. Jeez…I thought something was wrong with my flat screen television.
  • Where are the Patti Labelle, Steve Harvey, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Anita Baker, Pasto C, Donnie McClurkin and other veteran celebrity photographs? I have not seen many posted on urban blogs…whassup with that?
  • By the way…most folks can’t laugh at real ish….Kevin Hart was telling the truth when he said Diddy aka Swag need to stop changing his names and grow up….amongst other jokes that some folks may have felt salty hearing. Tell the truth..shame the devil!
  • Where was Jennifer Hudson in the round-up?

There you have it my one cent take on black entertainement…..the internet is buzzing about the BET Awards 2011 show….no need to spin a story that is being told from a subjective point of view across cyberspace. Overall, it was quite the black entertainment for the evening….thanks @BET!
