This story is picking up viral steam on the Internet as the media raise medical and ethical questions to anyone willing to answer them. Every news channel and blog has jumped on this story. I was watching “Larry King Live” tonight on CNN. He had several guest appear and give their two cent opinion about Nadya Suleman decision to birth the octuplets. The guest of course had a large family and said they don’t know how she is going to manage to care for these babies?
She really has no choice at this point. The babies, born nine weeks prematurely by C-section, were attended to by 46 medical staff, who expected seven babies. When the eighth — a boy — appeared, doctors were “stunned”. Should someone have advised her that she already have enough children, please don’t have any more? One thing is certain; it is not the physician responsibility to be the policeman for reproduction in the United States. I wondered what the difference between these women was and high society New Yorker women who want to give birth to twins or octuplets? I concluded it is moneyand race. Nadya Suleman is the second woman in the US to give birth to octuplets. The 8 babies were all born on January 26, in California. Can we blame her if she wants to make money off of her 14 babies? Celebrity’s mothers, fathers and couples make money off their babies all the time. There is a price put on their head based on A-D listers. There babies are auctions off to the highest magazine bidder before they are born. Why should she be any different? All of sudden her choices are put on blast by all the media coverage. Angelina Jolie comes to mind, remember she made $14 millies for reproducing twins and it is alleged that she donated it all to charity. Suleman is going to need tractor trailer, donations and every penny she can get her hands on to care for 14 children including herself.
I am sure her job does not pay her that well. There are contradicting reports on the Internet that she worked at the fertility clinic and some are reporting that she is unemployed. She worked at the clinic that fertilized her embryo in vitro fertilization (IVF)? What is that about? Perhaps she is an experiment? Hopefully people will feel sorry for her and start sending her donations. But in this economy everyone is pinching their pennies to survive the worst economic downfall the United States have ever seen. Suleman better cross her fingers that “Oprah” take pity on her and be her bailout plan. From where I am sitting, it appears she made a complicated decision to have more children without a plan and nor a husband to help with raising these 14 children.
I remember back in the day people when people had large families without planning for their future. There was a phrase that I use to hear. “We will make due and figure it out when we have them”. Fast forward a couple of generations later and we have literally stopped having babies before we are stabled in our careers. When I got married five years ago my husband used that statement and I thought he was nuts! My thoughts was the money and were the heck was it coming from to support additional children in our family. My husband couldn’t come up with a reasonable explanation. That ideal got squash quickly. Personally I think married working class women get a raw deal when deciding to have children. They have to work to make more money for the household, continue to contribute to the household, leave their babies with strangers after the family leave has been used up and take care of a baby a majority of the time alone despite having a partner. Career and women with means are running in droves to fertility clinics to get IVF treatment to help them become pregnant. Something must be in the water that prevents women from being easily impregnanted these days. Back in my mothers day that was not an issue for women to become pregnant. You look at a women and she got pregnant, that another one of those phrases I use to hear when I was growing up. Most working class families nowadays can only support 2.5 kids and themselves on the meager salaries that we make today. With the economy at its worst, a lot of folks are losing their jobs during this rough economy. Just think Suleman has 14 kids to support with no job or husband to help. She may end up on welfare and WIC. I am speechless that a single woman would want to have 14 kids to raise alone. You have to wonder does she have a lose screw in her head? We won’t know that until Suleman presents herself to the media and explain her reasoning for having 14 babies. The media is going to interrogate this women to no end; probably causing her any opportunity to receive money due to all of the negative backlash it could cause. Remember she is not the beautiful Angie Jolie, nor is she rich and she is a working class women. How dare she have this many kids according to some of the bias and judgmental media and new reporters reporting this story. At least that is the way it is coming across on the Internet and the news based on their questioning of her decision. Your hearing statements like “medical and ethical” decision of the physician to allow this women to receive IVF when she already had 6 children to begin with and questions to the physician why did they allow her to become pregnant? That’s the way I am interpreting this unbelievable story. In the meantime, she is resting in the hospital along with her 8 babies. Suleman is probably thinking of an explanation for her decision to have a football team of children to tell the media. I am sure she is watching this story on television in her hospital room. Her parents are letting her know that her decision to conceive 8 children is being tossed around in the news and on the Internet. I can only wish this women well. She is definitely going to have to lean on the Lord for assistance because as it stands: Man and the media is going to attempt to make a mockery out of her decision to bear 8 additional children to add to her already large family which totals 15 people in her household. That’s my two cents about this story. NEXT, now what about the stimulus package that President Obama is trying to get pass? We need to get our focus back on how our economy is going to get stimulated to create more jobs and put money in our pockets. Right now there are a lot of companies laying off folks. Macy’s reported tonight that they are laying off 7000 people.
Dreadful!
Children are a gift from God, they are his reward Psalms 127:3. The Hebrews regarded children as a blessing from the Lord (see Gen. 13:16; Ruth 4:13-16; 1 Sam. 1:11). They are a reward and heritage, bringing joy to their parents. Rearing a child is a sacred responsibility, and parents must depend on the Lord to help them guide their children.
